Jeremiah 31:7-14

God, Our Savior

2025 Church Motto

  1. This is the first Sunday of 2025. Happy New Year! I hope the time we spend worshiping God on the first Sunday of this new year is special for all of us. Our church's motto for 2025 is, “A Community Where Light Dwells, A Path Where Love Flows.”

  2. Before the renovation, the church building was almost entirely dark at night. During the renovation, we repaired all the lights, ensuring they illuminate the space. This transformation represents our hope for our church to become a community that reflects God’s grace and shines His light.

  3. This church building holds many stories. When you look around, you’ll find traces of life shared here over a long time. One striking feature is a memorial and a tree planted on the hill behind the church, commemorating a family who sent their young son to heaven. We’ve cleared the area around it so the memorial is visible.

  4. During the renovation, we worked hard to preserve the heritage of our church community. We made a cross from the wooden frames that were removed during the renovation, and it will soon be mounted. Looking out the window daily, I see many cars passing by. Although the surroundings appear rural, the traffic flow is comparable to urban areas. Hoping to transcend the boundaries of being merely a “Korean Church” and integrate well into the community, we came up with “A Path Where Love Flows.”

New Place, New Dream

  1. There’s a local paper called Orinda News. At the right time, we plan to send a press release introducing our church. Since we don’t have weekday gatherings yet, my car is often the only one in the parking lot. I hope this building will be well-used by the community.

  2. If you see my car parked, feel free to stop by for a cup of coffee. We have a café and a cozy space to relax, so don’t just pass by. Come in and share some fellowship.

  3. We plan to start gatherings on Wednesdays at 10 AM and 7 PM. These will initially be Bible study sessions. I encourage you to join us when we announce the details. The evening session is for working individuals, so please take the time to attend and share meaningful moments in your day.

  4. There are concerns like, “Who will come?” or “What if it doesn’t work out?” But even if the gatherings are small, they can still be meaningful. I assure you, we’ll share warm coffee and conversations during the meetings. Pastors can sometimes seem intimidating, but they can also be a source of support. Don’t hesitate—join us.

Hope-Filled Words: The Direction of God’s Salvation

  1. On this first Sunday of the year, today’s passage from Jeremiah is recorded as a majestic and hope-filled message. The title, “God is Our Savior,” reflects the familiar yet profound truth of what it means to confess God as our Savior. I hope this inspires us to live lives of salvation in 2025.

  2. In verse 7, Jeremiah urges us to declare:

  3. Prophetic declarations are not merely delivering words but affirming with certainty what will and must happen: “Save your people, Lord, the remnant of Israel.”

  4. The “people of the Lord” and the “remnant of Israel” refer to the Israelites taken captive by Babylon. This announcement of salvation comes during their darkest despair.

  5. The grace of this salvation is explained in verse 8: “I will bring them from the land of the north.” Here, the “land of the north” refers to Babylon.

  6. The physical distance from Jerusalem to Babylon was about 850 kilometers in a straight line, but in reality, the journey through mountains and valleys would span 1,500 kilometers—a daunting and seemingly impossible distance. Yet, God promises that even the blind, the lame, pregnant women, and mothers with newborns will safely return to Jerusalem.

  7. Even those unable to endure such a journey will be brought back by God. This is the essence of salvation.

  8. Salvation is not reserved for the perfect or unblemished. It is for those who cannot make the journey themselves and might even burden the community. God’s salvation is for all, regardless of their circumstances.

Experiencing Salvation Within Community

  1. From the end of last year to the beginning of this year, we’ve faced various anxieties, sorrows, and wounds. These challenges remind us that we are part of a larger community.

  2. Within our church, too, there are experiences that cause tension. Deacon Park has not been able to attend church since last fall due to health issues, having been diagnosed with a serious tumor. Sister Park is undergoing chemotherapy. Although her time with us has been brief, our heartfelt prayers for her healing transcend time. This shows that we are interconnected as a community, influencing and being influenced by one another.

Bearing Each Other’s Burdens

  1. Similarly, God’s salvation for Israel includes those who are imperfect or unable to complete the journey alone. This implies that some must help fill the gaps and bear the burdens of others.

  2. The text continues with promises of “a level path” and “streams of water.” In verse 12, it says, “They will be like a well-watered garden, and they will no longer languish.” These are hopeful images of life and restoration in the midst of desolation.

  3. However, the reality was starkly different. Even after Babylon fell and Persia rose to power, peace wasn’t guaranteed. The Israelites faced desolation—broken walls and a destroyed temple.

Dreaming of God’s Salvation

  1. Despite this, Jeremiah dreams of God’s salvation, which leaves no one behind. God’s salvation is inclusive, embracing the weak and the suffering without discrimination.

  2. On this first Sunday of the year, we are reminded that God’s plan to save us remains unwavering, even as we carry unresolved wounds and pain.

  3. We might be the “remnant” in today’s passage—those who are blind or lame, or like pregnant women and new mothers sacrificing for others.

  4. Whether we are weary souls seeking fulfillment, struggling with illness, or navigating challenging times, God’s salvation is for all of us.

  5. God’s banner of salvation waves for everyone, reminding us of His unchanging plan to save His people.

A Community of Experience

  1. Dear believers, our lives are not easy, but they are not without joy. As a pastor and as an individual, I find great joy and gratitude in being part of this community.

  2. In 2025, we face the challenge of holding onto our struggles while embracing God’s unwavering plan for our salvation.

  3. Let’s warm each other’s hearts and remind one another that we are not alone. Let’s live out the reason we come to church and strive to love one another.

  4. Some youth refer to our church as a “resting place for migratory birds”—a beautiful analogy. Like birds returning to a familiar place, let’s create a community where we can rest and reconnect.

  5. Those who hope in God’s salvation surpass their limitations and align their vision with His work. Let us strive to fulfill the new things God will accomplish through us in 2025.

  6. We are saved. Let us share Christ’s gospel with those in need of salvation and build this community with joy and gratitude.
