Then He said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe." Thomas said to Him, "My Lord and my God!" Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."John 20:27-29 (NIV)
Thomas: A Source of Comfort for Us
There is a profound comfort that Thomas brings to us. Although he is often labeled as "Doubting Thomas," the truth is that his attitude reflects something we frequently discover in our own spiritual journeys. While the church often portrays Thomas in a negative light, as if admonishing his lack of faith, history reveals that Thomas's story extends far beyond this single moment of doubt.
Some historical accounts suggest he carried the gospel as far as China. Others propose that the cross and fish symbols discovered in ancient Silla (South Korea) tombs indicate that the gospel he proclaimed reached Silla under the name of Nestorian Christianity. Regardless of the historical accuracy of these claims, they reveal something significant—Thomas underwent a remarkable transformation.
Rather than remembering him merely as "Doubting Thomas," wouldn't it be more fitting to recognize him as the apostle who potentially journeyed the farthest to spread the gospel? Though it is not commonly read in churches, the Gospel of Thomas presents a distinctive perspective on Jesus, offering insight into Thomas's understanding of Him.
John's gospel does not simply rebuke Thomas when it records Jesus saying, "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." Instead, it illuminates the church about the true nature of faith—what it authentically means to believe.
A Church That Prays and Supports One Another
Yesterday, we sent off Pastor Yoon Ji-eun into the operating room, and Pastor Choi Se-young visited the church. It appears he came to adjust the subtitles for the online service and also to collect the dinner for the Young Adult Wednesday service (Campus ministry). Since he hadn't eaten lunch, I arranged some takeout from a nearby restaurant. Watching him eat alone, I sensed a mixture of concern and urgency, but I also perceived that the church was providing him with comfort and strength.
The surgery was completed successfully, and I shared this positive update with the congregation through our ministry and youth group chat channels. It was an unexpected and sudden procedure, and I found myself deeply concerned as well. I believe she may be discharged today. I sincerely thank all the members who have supported her with their faithful prayers and care.
This situation has reminded us that Yeolin Church is being built through these precious connections of prayer and communication. Perhaps this is the essence of what it truly means to belong to a church—to be part of a community that earnestly prays for and supports one another.
We also continue to lift up Park Jung-ja Kown-Sa-Nim, who is undergoing chemotherapy after surgery, and all those we hold in our prayers. A church community that fervently intercedes for its members becomes an immeasurable source of strength.
Faith in All Its Forms
Faith manifests in many different ways. Some people believe firmly from the beginning, while others struggle and barely maintain their faith through difficulties and doubts. Yet, in all these diverse experiences, the church remains a faith community that walks together in prayer and care. Let us remember this profound truth. May our church be a sanctuary where people can always reach out for help in times of trouble and find hands ready to hold theirs with unwavering support.
Reflection
Being like Thomas is nothing to be ashamed of. It is simply another authentic expression of faith on the journey toward deeper belief.
