Numbers 2:1–34 March 19, 2025 (Wednesday)

So the Israelites did everything the Lord commanded Moses. That is the way they encamped under their standards, and that is the way they set out, each of them with their clan and family. (Numbers 2:34)

On sunny days, I enjoy the warmth of the sunlight; on rainy days, I find comfort in the sound of raindrops hitting the ceiling. Everywhere I turn, there is something good, and it feels as though I'm walking through a season filled with beauty and grace.

Then, I heard from afar the sudden news of an acquaintance's passing. Upon asking around, I learned she had battled illness for three years before being called home to God. Memories of this person, long tucked away, resurfaced and seemed to be painted on the walls I now gaze upon, illuminated by the soft light of spring.

She was a pastor, devoted to the fullness of life—studying, doing ministry, raising children, and supporting her husband. Just as she reached a point where she might have lived more for herself, illness struck and consumed her strength. Called home to God too soon. I remember how proud she was of her only daughter, who had come to the U.S., pursued doctoral studies, and followed in her footsteps as a pastor. Though we weren't particularly close, the thought of her mother, now alone in Korea, holding only her daughter's ashes, weighs heavily on my heart. That sorrow has lingered.

Is this what life is? That thought remained with me throughout the day. I gathered myself, attended to tasks, made calls and sent emails, and somehow brought the day to a close. Like morning mist clearing after sleep, I awoke with my mind fully occupied by today's duties. Is this life? I wondered, as I turned to Scripture and reflected.

I contemplated the tribes in the wilderness, preparing to journey forward, guided by banners that showed them which direction to take. Each of us carries a banner of life, walking paths unknown—sometimes alone, sometimes together—sometimes feeling isolated, at other times supported. Like the Israelites in the wilderness, we walk forward with just one promise to trust, uncertain of what lies ahead.

When they rested, they had to determine their position according to direction—east, south—and calculate how to remain oriented. They used every means to avoid losing their way in the wilderness. In much the same way, we navigate through life, trying different methods just to keep moving forward.

As the Israelites pitched their tents in the wilderness, we too anchor our hearts in places for a time. And when the time comes, we move forward again, guided by the banners before us.

Then it came to me clearly: this is life. Those called home early have simply reached their destination sooner. And we too walk similar paths. What matters most is whether we are headed in the right direction. As people of faith, who trust God and proclaim Jesus as Lord, our greatest strength is found in lifting high the banner of His calling and walking together in that direction.

As we journey, we find ourselves aligned with a greater purpose. As we walk, there will come a time to conclude our journey. But if we walk without losing direction, we gain the comforting assurance that we are walking together on the same path.

As I reflect on this, I feel moved to give thanks that I walk this path—the path led by Him. "It is good to walk together."

Reflection

Life seems to be about making the effort to walk together with others.
