아이들의 미소가~! 아름답습니다. The children's smiles are beautiful!

34 이제 나는 너희에게 새 계명을 준다. 서로 사랑하여라. 내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이, 너희도 서로 사랑하여라. 35 너희가 서로 사랑하면, 모든 사람이 그것으로써 너희가 내 제자인 줄을 알게 될 것이다.”(요한복음 13:34-35)

오랫만에 묵상으로 함께합니다. 한국에 다녀온 시차와 분주함이 겹쳐서 어제는 시간을 놓쳤습니다. 긴 시간은 아니었는데 길게 느껴지는 걸보면, 아침묵상을 통해 시작하는 저의 하루가 저에게 있어서 중요했던것 같습니다. 속회를 변경하고 묵상을 나누어야 실감이 났을텐데, 그래야..속회 이름도 익숙하게 입에 붙을텐데 그러면서도 오늘 묵상집을 펼치고, 성경책을 읽어내려갔습니다.

한국에 있는 어머니 집은 제가 초등학교 6학년때부터 살던 곳입니다. 모든것이 쉽고 빠르게 변하는데 혹 일어날지 모르는 재건축을 알리는 현수막을 제외하고는 여전히 변하지 않은 모습에 저의 성장기 기억들이 자연스럽게 소환되었습니다. 친구들과 야구하던 주차장, 축구하던 공원, 익숙한 공간들이었는데, 이제는 제가 낯선, 다른 사람이 되어서 마주한것 처럼 긴 여백은 모든 것을 새롭게 만들어내는 것 같습니다.

돌아온 지금 그 시간도 꿈처럼 느껴지는 건 아무래도 깊은 삶의 뿌리를 내리다 온것은 아니라 그런듯합니다. 잠깐 스쳐가듯 지나온 공간은 지금 뿌리를 내리고 살아가는 이곳에 삶을 기대하게 하고 새롭게 하는 것 같습니다. "이렇게 살아온 내 삶이 여기서 이렇게 살줄 알았을까?" 이 신비한 여정속에 하나님이 이끄심은 도대체 어떻게 이루어지는것일까?라는 경이로운 섭리에 다시한번 겸손하게 삶을 마주하게 하는 것 같습니다.

"사랑"에 대한 복음서의 기록은 요한복음에서 구체적인 삶으로 기록되어 있습니다. "네 이웃을 내몸과 같이 사랑하라"라는 기록은 다른 복음서에도 예수님의 말씀으로 전하고 있습니다. 요한복음은 이를 좀더 구체적으로 "내가 너희를 사랑한것과 같이 서로 사랑하라"고 이야기하십니다. 그리고 한가지더 "너희가 서로 사랑하면, 모든 사람이 그것으로써 너희가 제자인줄 알게될것"이라는 구체적인 사랑의 실천의 모양과 의미를 이야기하고 있습니다.

사랑을 실천하고 고백하는 것은 하나님이 이끄시는 기본적인 삶의 여정입니다. 삶의 뿌리를 내린다는 뜻은 어디에서 그 사랑을 전하고 실천하는가에 대한 이야기입니다. 추억의 공간은 기억으로만 존재할뿐, 지금 사랑을 실천하고 나누는 자리가 바로 저의 삶의 뿌리를 내리는 자리라는 생각이 들었습니다.

우리가 각자의 삶을 살다가 교회공동체, 한자리에 모입니다. 그리고 사랑을 나누고 실천하면, 우리는 바로 교회안에서 삶의 뿌리는 내리며 살아가는 존재라는 뜻입니다. 우리는 생각한것보다 더 깊은 관계와 나눔을 실천하며 살아가는 존재입니다. 이것을 요한복음은 새계명이라고 소개하고 있습니다.

이 계명을 실천하며 우리의 삶의 뿌리가 내려지는 교회공동체를 세워가기를 기대합니다.

34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this, everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." (John 13:34-35)

It has been a while since I last shared in meditation. Due to the time difference and busyness after returning from Korea, I missed my reflection time yesterday. Although it wasn't a long gap, it felt much longer than expected, which made me realize how important it has been for me to start my day with morning meditation.

Perhaps if I had shared my reflection after transitioning to a new small group, I would have felt the change more profoundly. I would have become more familiar with the new small group name as well. Nevertheless, today, I opened my meditation book and started reading the Bible.

My mother’s house in Korea has been our home since I was in sixth grade. While everything around us seems to change quickly, the house remains the same, except for a banner announcing a possible redevelopment project. This unchanged space naturally brought back memories of my childhood. The parking lot where I used to play baseball with friends, the park where we played soccer—these were all familiar places, yet now they felt distant, as if I had become a stranger encountering them anew. The long gap between then and now has reshaped my perception of these once-familiar places.

Now that I have returned, the time I spent there feels like a dream. Perhaps this is because I never truly put down roots there as an adult. Just passing through that space for a short while makes me reflect on my current life, where I am putting down roots and living in expectation of what is to come. "Did I ever imagine that my life would unfold this way?" This mysterious journey makes me humbly wonder how God’s guidance works in our lives.

The Gospel's message about love is recorded concretely in John’s Gospel. While the command "Love your neighbor as yourself" appears in other Gospels as Jesus' teaching, John’s Gospel takes it a step further: "Love one another as I have loved you." Additionally, John emphasizes that "By this, everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." This highlights not only the act of love but also its significance as a visible mark of discipleship.

Practicing and professing love is the fundamental journey that God leads us on. To put down roots in life means determining where and how we will share and practice this love. Memories remain only as recollections, but the present moment—where we actively love and serve others—is where we truly establish our roots.

As we each live our individual lives, we come together as a church community. When we practice and share love, we affirm our identity as a people who are deeply rooted in the life of the church. We are, in fact, much more interconnected than we may realize, actively engaging in deeper relationships and acts of sharing. John’s Gospel introduces this command as a "new commandment."

I look forward to seeing our church community grow as we live out this commandment, rooting ourselves in love.
