이번 주일에 이 문을 열고 함께해요.

자기 마음대로 말하는 사람은 자기의 영광을 구하지만, 자기를 보내신 분의 영광을 구하는 사람은 진실하며, 그 사람 속에는 불의가 없다. (요한복음7:18)

매일 아침 교회로 가는 길은 틸든파크(Tilden Park)를 지나가는 산길입니다. 요즘은 한창 기울어진 나무를 잘라내느라 중간중간에 일방통행으로 통제하는 구간이 있지만, 이 길은 서두르지 않고 가장 천천히 운전하며 주변을 살필 수 있는 유일한 구간인듯 합니다. 정상에서 오른쪽을 보면 샌프란시스코 도시 전체가 눈에 환하게 들어옵니다.

날이 좋은 날은 산호세까지 보이는 것 같이 남쪽으로 이어지는 도시전경도 들어옵니다. 왼쪽으로 눈을 돌립니다. 가장 자연스러운 깊은 산속이 눈에 들어옵니다. 그 가운데를 가로 질러갈때 깊은 자연과 가장 분주한 문명사이의 경계에 서있는 것 같습니다. 지루하지 않은 이 길을 밤에 돌아올때는 어둠과 빛이라는 절묘한 아름다움을 살피며 운전하게 됩니다.

석양이 지는 시간에 맞추면 차를 길에 대고 싶은 마음이 크게 유혹되지만 스쳐지나가는 것이 더 매력적으로 느껴진다는 생각에 짧은 순간을 스쳐옵니다. 가는길 20분 오는 길은 저녁길이라 23분정도 걸리는 이 길은 저의 삶의 가장 빈번한 거룩한 의식을 행하는 순간이라는 생각이 들었습니다. 삶은 이렇게 살아지고 어느날 마땅한 자리에서 지난 시간을 돌아볼 날을 마주할 것이라는 생각을 합니다. 이런 생각은 늘 겸손의 자리로 무릎꿇게 합니다. 시간은 가고 마땅히 그 시간에 맞는 자리는 바뀔것이니 절대로 영원하지 않다.

오늘 본문에서 예수님의 입을 통해 초대교회의 거짓교사들의 문제를 짚어내고 있습니다. 이들은 자기의 영광을 구하는 자들이고, 자기 마음대로 말하는 자라고 이야기합니다.

지금도 이와 비슷한 모양으로 교회를 대표하는것처럼 휘젖고 다니는 자들이 있습니다. 자기 마음대로 말하면서 성경적이라고 떠들고 자기중심적인 삶을 권위로 착각하는 이들이 교회를 분탕질하고 있습니다. 믿지 않는 자들에게 메시지를 전하지 않고 교회를 잘 다니는 자들을 향해 잘못된 교회라고 소리지르고 자신은 좋은 교회라고 이야기하는 자들이 이상한 기독교를 만들어내고 있습니다.

한국에서 법원에 불을 지르는데 주도했던 젊은 청년이 06년생 저희딸과 동갑입니다. 그리고 어느 교회에 열심으로 신앙생활하는 청년이라는 것이 뉴스에 등장합니다. 이제 18살인, 트럼프 대통령의 막내아들과 동갑인 이 아이는 경찰에 잡혔고, 재판을 받게될텐데, 최소 10년이상의 징역이 예상된다고 합니다. 이제 막 세상에 첫발을 내딛는 아이의 삶을 이렇게 몰아넣는 교회가 있다는게 통탄할일입니다.

자기의 영광을위해 마음대로 말하는 자들은 다른이들이 어찌되든 상관없어 하는 것 같습니다. 이들을 향해 "너희 가운데 그 율법을 지키는 사람은 한 사람도 없다" 라는 예수님의 질책이 뼈속같이 전해지기를 바라는 마음입니다.

묵상

교회는 군림하거나 주도하는 곳이 아니라 피난처와 비워내는 겸손의 자리여야합니다.

John 7:18“Anyone who speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but the one who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a person of truth; there is nothing false about him.”

Every morning, my route to church takes me through the winding roads of Tilden Park. Recently, sections of the road have been under one-way traffic control due to the removal of fallen trees. Yet, this stretch of road seems to be the one place where I can drive slowly, without rushing, and take in my surroundings. From the top, looking to the right, I can see the entire city of San Francisco, bathed in light.

On clear days, the cityscape stretches southward, almost as if you could see all the way to San Jose. When I turn my gaze to the left, I am met with the sight of a deep and untouched wilderness. Driving through this space feels like standing on the boundary between the natural world’s tranquility and the bustling civilization. At night, this road reveals the delicate interplay between light and darkness, creating a serene beauty as I make my way home.

When driving at sunset, I often feel tempted to pull over and take it all in, yet there’s something more alluring about letting the moment pass fleetingly. The drive takes about 20 minutes in the morning and 23 minutes in the evening. These moments, I’ve come to realize, are some of the most sacred rituals in my daily life. Life unfolds in this way, and I imagine that one day, I will look back from the right place and reflect on the days gone by. Such thoughts often bring me to a place of humility, reminding me that time passes, seasons change, and nothing lasts forever.

In today’s passage, Jesus addresses the issue of false teachers in the early church. He describes them as those who seek personal glory and speak only from their own minds.

Even now, there are people who resemble these false teachers, claiming to represent the church while creating chaos. They speak as they please, proclaiming their words to be biblical, mistaking their self-centered lives for authority, and causing disruption within the church. Instead of delivering messages to non-believers, they criticize those faithfully attending church, labeling them as part of a "wrong church" while presenting themselves as belonging to the "true church." These actions are distorting Christianity.

A recent news story from Korea deeply troubled me. A young man who led the arson attack on a courthouse is the same age as my daughter, who was born in 2006. It was reported that he was a fervent member of a church. This 18-year-old, the same age as former President Trump’s youngest son, was arrested and is expected to face trial with a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison. It’s heartbreaking to think that there are churches driving young people into such tragic circumstances as they take their first steps into adulthood.

Those who speak for their own glory seem indifferent to the consequences for others. Jesus’ words, “Not one of you keeps the law,” resonate deeply, and I hope they strike at the very core of such individuals.

Reflection

The church should not be a place of dominance or control but a sanctuary of humility and a space to empty oneself.
